Liza Detenber, LICSW

Hi, I’m Liza, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), EMDR Consultant, and lifelong student of embodiment and inner wisdom. I help young adults, adults, parents, and therapists connect to the self-trust, groundedness, and steadiness already inside them.

My therapeutic style integrates body and mind so all parts of you can feel seen, grounded, centered, and whole. In our work together, we gently befriend your emotions with compassion, rewire reactive patterns, and teach your nervous system it’s safe to rest again. We go at the pace of your nervous system so that you feel safe and all parts of you are on board. As a mother and someone who identifies as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and has experienced anxiety firsthand, I know how uncomfortable it can feel to be stuck in overwhelm and self-judgment. Having majored in Spanish and lived in South America for a couple years after college, I am bilingual in Spanish and English. Este es un espacio donde eres bienvenida/o tal como eres.

Many of the people who come to work with me have tried to “fix” themselves through thought-based approaches. They often say, “I understand it intellectually, but I don’t feel it.” I am here to tell you that nothing needs to be “fixed”, because you are not broken. You are already whole, exactly as you are. Through working with your body, we can create a felt sense of safety that allows you both understand and feel it.

Together we tune out the noise to reconnect to that wholeness inside. Our work together goes deeper. We listen to the language of the body, gently explore the nervous system, and meet emotions with curiosity and compassion, allowing unfinished cycles and unmet needs that may be frozen in time to soften, move, and find completion so that you can be the most authentic you.

My deepest hope is that you come to feel your innate wholeness and enoughness, and learn to offer yourself the tenderness, protection, and nourishment you deserve. By working with your system rather than against it, a lasting sense of groundedness and steadiness naturally emerges and holds you through the waves of life.

All are welcome here. I work from a foundation of cultural humility and am committed to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and LGBTQ+ affirming care, which is an approach largely shaped by my upbringing. I grew up with two moms in a queer household, and not seeing my family reflected in mainstream culture gave me an early understanding of what it means to feel “othered.” At the same time, I hold my work with the humility that I don’t fully understand all the ways my clients or other communities may experience marginalization and I approach it with curiosity. I am committed to the lifelong learning of antiracism and work to decolonize my practice as a therapist.

I also attended meditation and yoga camps from a very young age. Through these early embodied practices, I bring a deeply spiritual (but non-religious) lens to my work, rooted in connection to self, others, and our shared humanity and based in mindfulness. I’m deeply honored to witness people come home to themselves, cultivating safety within their bodies and living from a place of self-trust and steadiness.

My Guiding Values

Curiosity

When we can explore with curiosity we allow vulnerable parts to show us what they need to feel soothed; from there growth occurs.

Compassion

Holding curiosity allows compassion to naturally arise. When we can shower our vulnerable parts with compassion, they can settle back allowing our wise parts to be in the driver’s seat again.

Trust

Trust is one of the foundations of relationships. I work to create a safe space and a therapeutic relationship with a foundation of trust and authenticity.

Safety & Collaboration

Safety often comes from a place of collaboration and consent. We will go at your pace, checking in along the way to make you’re stretching and growing and feel safe while doing so. I believe that each therapeutic relationship allows for both the client and therapist to learn from and impact one another.

Cultural Humility

I recognize that systems of oppression impact all systems, including spaces of healing. As humans in this society, it is important to name and acknowledge the effects of oppressive systems on our bodies and minds. I believe deeply in cultural humility and ground myself in the life work of unpacking white supremacy culture and engaging in anti-racism learning and practices. I work to create a space that is inclusive of all identities, while holding curiosity of how these identities may be impacted by systems of oppression.

Modalities

I offer an integrative approach to therapy and support, drawing from both evidence-based modalities and embodied, intuitive practices.

Certified Modalities

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-backed, trauma-informed modality that helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they no longer feel so overwhelming. I use EMDR to support clients working through anxiety, self-esteem challenges, trauma, overwhelm, and negative self-talk. Through bilateral stimulation and structured phases, we target the root causes of emotional pain and gently rewire internal beliefs. Following EMDR therapy, clients often report a felt sense of freedom and access to the inner stillness, confidence, groundedness, wisdom and resilience that was always there.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing helps you tune into the language of your body and release stored tension from the nervous system and complete incomplete stress cycles. Many clients arrive in therapy feeling disconnected from their bodies, or overwhelmed by experiences and reactions that they do not totally understand. SE supports a return to regulation, gently expanding your capacity to feel safe inside your body, and moving past stuck experiences through the body. Often this gets below what is cognitive and shifts what we might not totally understand yet through words. I integrate SE-informed approaches to help clients move from fight, flight, freeze or fawn into grounded presence, especially when working with trauma and parenting triggers.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a powerful modality that helps identify and release deeply held emotional patterns stored in the subcortical brain. It works by using the visual field to access places in the brain where trauma and distress may be held. I use Brainspotting to support clients who feel "stuck" or find traditional talk therapy limiting. It is particularly helpful for accessing preverbal or nonverbal material, and can be woven gently into work with anxiety, trauma, and overwhelm. This is also very supportive when working through parenting triggers.
